Steam Turbine installed at Edgar Thompson works |
A second topping turbine was successfully started for United States Steel. This time the unit was installed at the Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock, PA.
The concept of installing a topping turbine at U.S. Steel had been considered by the plant for almost ten years. During that time no successful bid was made and the job lay dormant. Then rem ENGINEERING was made aware of the opportunity. The problem was a widely varying steam flow. The specification was written around a single valve, single stage turbine. That design unit could be sized to handle the high load but the generator would motor at low loads, or if designed not to motor at low loads it could not handle the high steam flow. We recognized this as an ideal application for a multivalve two stage unit.
This design turbine, with its automatically adjusting arc of entry, demonstrates a far better efficiency and the ability to maintain this efficiency over a wide range of steam flows. This proved to be the answer.
We now knew the proper unit to install. The savings were far greater than United States Steel had anticipated. Our next step was to reduce the price to meet the required return on investment criteria. We utilized our contacts in the used equipment arena to locate a turbine that closely matched our criteria and reduced the price by close to fifty percent. That sealed the deal.
This project demonstrates three things about rem ENGINEERING:
- Expertise. We understand how the equipment we install works and approach each job with an open mind. Think outside the box.
- Tenacity. We work tirelessly to meet the needs of our clients.
- Repeat Business. We are immensely proud to have United States Steel as a repeat customer.
