DESIGNED COGENERATION PLANT FOR TRADEWINDS
OF VA. LTD.
Cogenerated electricity saves 87% on
their annual electric bill. Increased gasification tax credits
improve savings an additional 52%.
rem ENGINEERING
, Inc. custom designed a cogeneration system for Tradewinds
of VA. Ltd., a progressive lumber company located in Bumpass,
Virginia. By operating the existing gasifier at its maximum,
safe, steam load, we maximized the federal gasification tax
credits and maximized electric generation. Electricity is
generated using a Murray "K" type condensing steam
turbine generator and a Coppus topping turbine generator.
An evaporative condenser was used in place of the conventional
cooling tower system. The generated electricity is utilized
"inside the fence", thus offsetting purchased electricity
from the local utility. The combined annual savings creates
a project with under a 1½ year simple payback.
Tradewinds of VA. Ltd. recently purchased a new dry kiln.
Tradewinds' dry kiln operates on low pressure steam. At the
start of a new batch, the dry kiln requires a high steam load
to rapidly bring the temperature inside the kiln up to the
set point. Once the set point is reached however, the steam
demand is dramatically reduced, requiring only enough steam
to maintain temperature. The large fluctuation in steam load
presents a terrific opportunity for cogeneration.
Mr. Lanny Woolfolk, President and C.E.O.
for Tradewinds of VA. LTD., has agreed to serve as a reference
for rem ENGINEERING.
We are pleased to provide his phone number upon request. A
visit to Tradewinds' facility can be arranged.
